Why It’s Never Been Harder to Fill a Job in America
A recent article on Yahoo! Finance commences with the provocative sentence, “It has never been harder to fill an open job in the United States.”
Then a chart is presented that illustrates that it now takes 31 days to fill an open position – up from 15 days to do so in 2009 – a 100% increase!
Reasons for this doubling of time for recruiting are many, but the two main points seem to be that wages are not keeping up with changing times, and thus potential workers are unwilling to move to where the jobs are located. As a quote in the reporting says it, “’I hear about these labor shortages, and I think, that’s a crock,’ manufacturing salesperson Kristin Charlton told Yahoo Finance. ‘When I compare salaries to what they were 10 years ago, they’re not significantly higher. It’s not enough for me to move across the country.’”
In other words, prices for goods and services continue to rise inexorably over time, yet pay for employees is not rising equally and so many individuals simply don’t want to waste their time and resources moving somewhere else for a job. The skills gap, an aging workforce, and the slightly peculiar work habits of so-called “Millennials” also adds to the problem.
