Layoffs Decline and Job Openings Rise – Send in the Temps Today!
We keep reporting on the staggering figures hitting the news these days about our extra-robust economy currently at-work in the marketplace. For factors that are at once easy to understand and also complicated and convoluted, America is experiencing a very healthy economy jobs-wise, which is music to our ears and to the collective ears of the entire temporary staffing industry.There are simply more jobs available then there seems to be individuals to fill them. The Wall Street Journal – one of the most dependable and trustworthy publications on financial matters in the USA – reported earlier this week that layoffs have declined to the lowest level in 50 years.
As the reporting goes, “U.S. workers currently are less likely to be laid off than at any point in at least 50 years. For every 10,000 people in the workforce, 66 claimed new unemployment benefits in July, trending at the lowest point on record going back to 1967. The previous low point, 83 per 10,000, was touched in April 2000, at the height of a technology boom. Separate U.S. Department of Labor data shows the rate of layoffs and other discharges as a share of total employment this year is at the lowest level on record back to 2000……After nearly seven years of consistent job growth, firms are reluctant to let employees go in a tight labor market in which available workers with a recent employment history are quickly snapped up.
Meanwhile, more Wall Street Journal reporting this week chronicles a record 6.2 million job openings as of the end of June 2017. According to the WSJ, “Employers across the U.S. posted a record 6.2 million job openings as of the end of June. The number of job openings climbed by 417,000 in June for private employers and by 44,000 for government postings, according to the U.S. Department of Labor….The availability of job openings differs substantially by industry.”
These stats matter because they indicate a market where hard-working and ambitious companies in all sorts of industries are having a rough time finding the labor supplies they require to fill orders, expand productivity, and compensate for employee absences or shortages of one type or another.
