There is some great news in store for temporary employees this holiday season. Many experts are predicting record high hiring for all kinds of positions between now and New Year’s. Time Magazine joins the crowd in saying, “It’s a great year to snag a seasonal job.”
Time cites many positive signs. US Bureau of Labor Statistics show that holiday hiring is finally bouncing back to pre-recession levels based on increases in each year since the low point in 2008. Hiring in 2013 reached 786,000 compared to 325,00 in 2008. In 2014, those figures could top 800,000.
Among the major companies leading this trend are Toys R Us and UPS. Toys R Us has announced that it plans to add on 45,000 employees. That is an increase that more than doubles its current workforce. Similarly, UPS says it will soon hire almost 100,000 workers to help get all those presents delivered on time.
Of course, these days not all of the openings are restricted to brick and mortar retail stores anymore. Online shopping has changed the way consumers purchase their new toys and electronics. If you join the holiday workforce, you may find yourself at the cash register or in a call center. Shipping departments and warehouses also see a huge increase in traffic. The same is true for many other industries like food service and travel.
It is common for businesses to start hiring early so it pays to act fast. Black Friday type sales start long before the actual calendar date. Employers are looking for seasonal employees now, and the competition will increase as the weeks go by. A positive attitude and flexible schedule are great assets in your seasonal job search.
