Working with a temp-to hire employee can be one of the greatest ways to determine you’re getting someone of quality before you decide to hire them permanently. But it’s easy to take those people for granted if they do an especially good job for you. Most temp-to-hires go out of their way to do the best possible job out of the prospects you’ll notice them and hire them as a full-time employee. As much as they do outstanding work for you, it’s time you also considered how you treat them so the feeling is mutual.
You don’t want to hire that employee later and then find out they don’t really want to work for you after all. If you don’t treat them well, they may not have it in good faith to want to work for you. Think of doing a few things in order to show your appreciation for your temp-to-hire employee from their very first day.
Give Them a Welcoming Work Environment
You may think that hiring a temp work means giving them a desk or work area that looks more like a volunteer’s quarters than one for an actual employee. Temp-to-hires should never be given a messy or disorganized work environment, because it only makes their own work more disorganized. It’s also psychologically unhealthy to give them such an untidy desk or environment since it can frustrate them to a point where they won’t want to stick around.
Keep Them Busy and Productive
Just like you should with your regular employees, you want to keep your temp-to-hire employees busy and productive with something worth their time. While some companies give temp employees more menial or repetitive work tasks, try to give them something more meaningful so they can feel fulfilled. If you give them work that connects to your company goals, they’ll already feel like one of the employees. It makes for a perfect transition when you hire them permanently.
Show Your Appreciation for Their Work
If you’ve made the effort to give your temp-to-hire something meaningful to do, show your appreciation for the good work they do afterward. Not recognizing a temp worker’s extra effort to get something done sooner than expected isn’t going roll off that worker’s back. It’s probably going to be a clear signal to them you don’t appreciate your employees like you should. Even if they may suspect you reward your permanent employees, temp workers don’t want to feel isolated.
